The most common pet parrot is the Senegal Parrot.

The Senegal parrot is the most commonly kept of the Poicephalus birds. These birds have been imported in great numbers in the past and have kept their popularity throughout. The Senegal parrot has 3 sub-species which can easily be separated and identified. The first is the Sengalus species which has a yellow belly and originates from southern Mauritania, southern Mali to Guinea and from the Island of Los. The next of the Senegal parrot sub-species is the Versteri species which has a red belly and comes from the Ivory Coast region, Ghana, and Nigeria. The last sub-species is the Mesotypus and this bird has an orange belly and can be found in northern Nigeria, northern Cameroon, and southwestern Chad.

A Senegal parrot makes for a great pet due to their moderate size and lower noise generation. Senegal parrots are able to and will talk and imitate sounds, however they are not as accurate at it as an African Grey would be. The Senegal parrot is also known to attach themselves to one person, but unlike the African Grey, they are also known to change this person on occasion. Some owners have observed that the bird initially showed its affection to themselves, but later switched over to the spouse or child.

Senegal parrots are affectionate, entertaining, and make great pets. For more information on the Senegal parrot and if they are the right bird for your home, check out the resource links at the bottom of the page.
