The intelligent bird: The African Grey Parrot

If you want an intelligent parrot with undying loyalty, the African Grey parrot is for you.

The African Grey parrot is probably the most intelligent parrot in the world. They can out talk any parrot as well as show signs of problem solving and are considered to be the shyest parrot as well.

There are two sub-species of African Grey parrot. The first is the Congo Grey, which is the larger of the two and has a bright red tail. The other sub-species of the African Grey parrot is the lesser known Timneh parrot. Timnehs are smaller in frame, darker in color, and have maroon tails. The Timneh Greys are said to be a bit less shy than the Congo Greys and a little more neurotic.

The talking potential of both African Grey parrot are about equal and can not only imitate human voices but also produce all sorts of sounds and whistles. However, not every African Grey parrot will talk. There are cases when the parrots won't talk at all. Although these instances do exist, it is safe to say that most African Greys will talk and talk well.

An interesting thing about the African Grey parrot is it's tendency to bond with one primary human. Because of this, when other people besides the bonded human are around, the bird can become shy and introverted. There have been other cases when the bird tries to fend off other humans and protect the person they have bonded with. This phenomenon reminds us more of dogs than birds, but it is true and very interesting as well.

The African Grey parrot is an interesting bird that makes not only a great pet but something to study.
